Today marks 34 years since the Ukrainian football community began its independent history, having exited the union federation on December 13, 1991. On July 3, 1992, Ukraine became a full member of FIFA, and on June 17, 1993 — UEFA.

The declaration of an independent Ukrainian state on August 24, 1991, gave impetus to the processes of organizing an independent football governance.

At the beginning of September, a joint meeting of the federation leadership and the football community was held, at which it was decided to create their own football institutions, not subordinate to Moscow officials. In October, Viktor Bannikov — a legendary Ukrainian goalkeeper who, as an official, made great efforts towards establishing independent Ukrainian football — visited Switzerland. The then UEFA president Lennart Johansson assured him of his full support for Ukraine's entry into the European football community.

On December 1 at a nationwide referendum, the creation of an independent state was confirmed, and on the 13th of that month in the hall of the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Tourism on Espaladna Street in Kyiv, the football leadership of the republic unanimously adopted a statement declaring their exit from the union federation. Viktor Bannikov was elected as the first president of the All-Ukrainian sports community organization «Football Federation of Ukraine», with Yevgenia Kotelnikova serving as vice-president.

In February 1992, the Football Federation of Ukraine, along with representatives from Georgia, Slovenia, and Croatia, received the status of a temporary member of FIFA and UEFA. On July 3 of that same year, Ukraine became a permanent member of FIFA, and on June 17, 1993 — UEFA. This gave them the right to send their national teams and clubs to international competitions.
