Today, the renowned trainer and Hero of Ukraine, Valeriy Lobanovskyi, would have turned 87 years old.

Valeriy Vasylivych Lobanovskyy was born in Kyiv on January 6, 1939. He played as an attacker for «Dynamo» Kyiv (1959-1964), «Chornomorets» Odessa (1965-1966), and «Shakhtar» Donetsk (1967-1968). Champion of the USSR in 1961. Holder of the Cup of the USSR in 1964. Played two matches for the USSR national team and two matches for the Olympic USSR national team.

 

After ending his football career, he coached FC «Dnipro» Dnipropetrovsk (1968-1973) and «Dynamo» Kyiv (1973-1982, 1984-1990, 1996-2002). Under Lobanovskyy's leadership, the Kyiv «Dynamo» won the USSR Championship eight times and five times in the Ukrainian Championship. As a coach, he led Dynamo to six victories in the Cup of the USSR, three in the Cup of Ukraine, as well as triumphs in the Cup Winners' Cup 1975 and 1986, and the UEFA Super Cup 1975.

The Valeriy Lobanovskyy-coached national team of the USSR was a bronze medalist at the 1976 Olympics and silver at Euro-1988. The national team of Kuwait, with which he also worked, won the bronze at the Asian Games in 1994. He led the national team of Ukraine from 2000 to 2002.

Valeriy Lobanovskyy was awarded the UEFA «For Merits» and FIFA «For Merits» orders.

The legendary coach passed away on May 13, 2002, in Zaporizhzhia.
