Romania hosted the first round of UEFA Euro 2026 (WU-17) Group A, where Ukraine's women's team finished last in their group after losing to Switzerland (0:1) and Austria (0:4), and drawing with the hosts (1:1). The team will now move on to Group B, where they will compete in the spring.

Head coach Lyudmila Lemescho spoke to the official website of the Ukrainian Football Association about what hindered their performance:

— I have no complaints regarding my players' motivation and dedication. They all wanted to showcase their skills in Romania. The most unfortunate part is that we didn't concede even to the favorites — Switzerland. We were heading towards a draw, but at the end of injury time, due to an individual mistake, we conceded...

— Perhaps this disappointing loss psychologically affected your players, and in the next match they conceded four 'clean' goals from Austria?

— You know, I always try to realistically evaluate what happens on the field, my players' actions, and how well they follow instructions. Our girls deserved a much better performance. It's hard to believe, but Austria converted all their chances while we missed several from good positions. The goalkeeper of our opponents also played exceptionally.

— The tournament situation was such that in the last match, Ukraine had to win against the hosts to stay in the elite...

— I don't like complaining about conditions, but we played on a very tough pitch since previous matches were held during rain. This wasn't favorable for our team which relied on technical and tactical football. We had to adjust and play simpler, yet territorial dominance didn't seem in doubt. When we did manage to take the lead, it seemed that we wouldn't let go of it. I can't say my players started playing out of desperation; the match was evenly contested until late when Romania managed to score after a set-piece situation. Then there was nothing left but to storm their goal with all our might. We had several opportunities to snatch victory, but unfortunately, we couldn't capitalize on them. It's such a pity because we didn't deserve to be last. I hope despite the setback, my players gained experience that will help them progress.
