The opponents first met in Baku on February 28, 2006, in a friendly match that ended in a scoreless draw.

The second time the rivals faced each other was also in a friendly match, but this time it was in Kyiv on August 15, 2006. Then, thanks to goals from Andriy Voronin, Serhiy Nazarenko, Ruslan Rotan, Oleksandr Gusiov, Andriy Vorobei and Oleksiy Belik, Ukraine defeated their opponent — 6:0.

The third encounter of the teams took place a little more than a month later on September 9 in Baku at the Republican Stadium named after Tofig Bahramov in the World Cup 2026 qualifier, where the rivals drew 1-1 with a goal from Georgiy Sudakov.
